Prepare for life after the match

Pet Ownership Guidance

A thoughtful adoption or purchase starts before the handover and continues through daily care, changing needs, and a lifelong welfare commitment.

Plan for care, not only arrival.
01

Preparation

Before you adopt or purchase

Consider whether the pet’s species, age, temperament, activity level, grooming, training, and medical needs fit your home and routine. Speak with everyone who shares the home and check housing or travel constraints before committing.

Ask clear questions about history, behavior, diet, veterinary care, medications, and the kind of environment in which the pet is likely to thrive. If information conflicts or feels incomplete, pause.

  • Time for daily care, exercise, training, and enrichment
  • A safe settling-in space and realistic introduction plan
  • Agreement from household members and appropriate backup care
  • Independent review of the pet and relevant records
02

Long-term planning

Costs and veterinary care

Routine costs

Plan for suitable food, bedding, equipment, grooming, training, preventive care, and recurring veterinary needs.

Unexpected costs

Set aside an emergency fund and consider whether appropriate insurance or another financial plan fits your circumstances.

Health continuity

Arrange an early veterinary check, transfer available records, understand current medication, and keep preventive care up to date.

03

Identification & local requirements

Microchipping, registration, and licensing

Ask whether the pet is microchipped and how the registered keeper information should be updated. Depending on where you live and the type of pet, local registration, licensing, vaccination, import, housing, or identification requirements may apply.

Requirements differ by jurisdiction and can change. Check current guidance from the relevant local authority, veterinarian, or official government source rather than relying on a listing or general marketplace guidance.

04

Safe transfer

Plan a safe, documented handover

  • Confirm the pet, the other participant, ownership, and agreed terms
  • Bring a secure carrier, lead, restraint, or other species-appropriate equipment
  • Transfer care routines, food, medication, and relevant records privately
  • Use a safe, appropriate setting and tell a trusted person your plan

Do not let urgency replace appropriate checks. A handover should protect the pet from avoidable stress and give the new owner enough information to continue care.

05

Protect yourself

Avoid scams and pressure

Pause if

Stories keep changing, photos appear copied, the pet cannot be seen, records look altered, or someone demands secrecy or immediate payment.

Keep private

Passwords, sign-in codes, full payment credentials, unnecessary identity documents, and exact home-address details.

Keep a record

Use SweetHomePet applications, buyer interest, and messaging so relevant history remains available if a concern must be reported.

06

After arrival

Support ongoing welfare

Give the pet time to decompress and learn a predictable routine. Watch appetite, comfort, toileting, movement, and behavior, and seek qualified veterinary or behavior support when concerns arise. Use humane, species-appropriate care and training.

Needs change with age, health, environment, and household circumstances. Continue reviewing exercise, enrichment, social needs, preventive care, identification details, and emergency plans throughout the pet’s life.

Continue safely

Read practical guidance for messages, payments, meetings, and handovers.
